The Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone was founded in 1991 and approved by the State Council in April 1993, and its governance covers an area of 192.7 square kilometers, including 102 square kilometers of new development area. The built area in the development zone has reached 40 square kilometers. In April, 2000, it was approved by the State Council to set up Hubei Wuhan Export Processing Zone in the development zone, with a planning area of 2.7 square kilometers, and in the first phase, 0.7 square kilometers has been developed.
